Scrolls Unwrapped

TRADITION

Discover the fascinating process of preparing parchments just as they were done thousands of years ago. Animal hides stretched out on a scribe’s stretching frame lend authenticity to this interesting process.

Children are encouraged to help sand down the hide to create parchment fit for writing. The different textures of the various animal Hides on display allow them to explore the uniqueness of each one.

An introduction to calligraphy gives each student the skills to actually write their very own name on a piece of parchment! Using a mortar and pestle, participants use natural ingredients to create the ink that will be used later.
